2017 ARENDSIG SHIRAZ RED VEGAN WINE
Arendsig (Eagle’s View) is a privately owned farm with its own vineyards and boutique cellar situated in the (southern part) foot hills of the Robertson Valley. It is in this beautiful valley that Lourens van der Westhuizen and his team hand-select grapes of the finest quality, from which he hand crafts his quality wines with its unique and distinct aroma, flavour and character.
VITICULTURE
This Shiraz is made from a single vineyard planted in Block: A12 on calcareous, loam and Karoo shale soil. Between Langeberg and Riviersonderend Mountain range, west facing slope above the banks of the Breede River, south in the Robertson Wine Valley, Wakkerstroom Wes, R317, Arendsig Farm. Meso-climate is influenced by everyday South Eastern during summer, morning fog in winter, big variation in day & night temperatures, Langeberg and Riviersonderend Mountain range and Breede River that runs through the valley.
WINEMAKING
This Arendsig Shiraz red vegan wine is a single vineyard wine is made with minimal interference throughout the vilification. During fermentation, natural yeasts are used and not enzymes. Maturation takes place in neutral vessels to bring through the unique vineyard character. Due to minimal interference through vilification, sediment may occur. Maturation takes place for 10 months in foudre cask followed by 3 months in neutral, 225L barrels.
MATURATION
14 Months in 5000L Fudre Cask. The balance in neutral 225L French Oak barrels.
WINE ANALYSIS
Ph: 3.56; TA:5.4; Alcohol: 14%; VSO2: 13 mg/l; TSO2: 71 mg/l; RS: 4.2g/l
TASTING NOTE
Nose: Hints of tobacco, cigar box, spice, cherries and vibrant red fruit with violet floral notes
Palate: Rich, dense and fruit forward followed by black pepper and round subtle fruit tannin
