2016 LEIPZIG SHIRAZ MOURVÈDRE VIOGNIER RED VEGAN WINE
The name, Leipzig, is from the German “city of music”, where the forefathers of this estate stem from. The section of land that is now known as Leipzig was originally bought by Mrs Alida Smit, who was born on the neighbouring farm. The youngest daughter of Alida and Francois Smit, Alida Bester runs the farm today. Alida Bester, along with her husband, Vian, maintain a truly lovely wine venue. We had the pleasure of meeting Vian, who explained the history of the farm and their wines while we tasted them.
Veritas Award 2017 – Silver
This Rhône-like blend is made from 72% Shiraz, 21% Mourvèdre and 7% Viognier.
Three iconic cultivars that is beautifully balanced in taste and colour. Grapes harvested on Fransmanskraal Farm, Stellenbosch. Made from grapes that were sourced from 38-year old bush vines to produce concentrated flavours. Aged for 6 months in small oak barrels before undergoing further bottle aging.
Alcohol: 13%; Residual Sugar: 2.8 g/l; PH: 3.65; Total Acid: 5.3 g/l
A definitive spice coupled with smells of perfumed forest floor gives way to a mineral saltiness on the palate.
Further bottle aging will only improve this wine, but it may be just as easily enjoyed upon purchase.
Pair with: Red meat, charcuterie meat & cheese platters or special salted caramel deserts
